Miller Homestead Property Description
An Ideal corporate or family retreat, the Miller Homestead is a 1 1/2
story stone house built by a Quaker family in 1822. The home was restored
over the period from 1996-1999 and listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. The home maintains it's original charm and character
of the period in which it was built with it's fireplaces, bake oven,
and original pine floors and wood work through out the home. A modern
yet "shaker style" kitchen with granite counter tops and early period
baths have been added with a claw foot tub. The first floor has an open
kitchen, living and dining room area with rustic and antique furniture
characteristic of a great room in Adirondack style. There are four bedrooms
and one over-sized loft area for sleeping a total of 9-12 people. All
bedrooms are decorated and furnished with antiques. The home also includes
a full basement with the original cistern intact as well as a washer
and dryer and modern forced hot air heating system.
The Miller Homestead is situated on a knoll and coupled with the visual
qualities of its stonework, projects an air of distinction as one approaches
it up Hallock Hill Road past a long stretch of woods and the remains
of a stone wall lining the road. All electric service to the house is
underground so the house appears to be from an era before such modern
conveniences were available. The building glistens with a unique variety
of sizes, colors, and shapes of stone. Stones range in color from browns
and orange to pink/reddish, and in size from small chinks to huge block,
three foot by three foot in some places. The shapes vary from irregular
jagged stones to neat square blocks and no two stones are the same.
Potsdam sandstone is noted to have a lot of quartzite embedded in the
stone which adds to its unique color and quality.
